Flashlight Daily: Follow the Ticket Not the Track, A Court Told Meta to Change How Instagram Works, and AMD Acquires Taalas
Good morning, it’s Monday, the 10th of August, and there’s a theme running through the stories today, and that theme isn’t music or chips or child safety. It’s leverage. Each of the articles below is based on the same question: who actually owns the part of the system that determines where value ends up, and who merely thinks that they do.
Suno can produce a million songs before lunch and has actually spent money to discover who purchases a ticket. A judge in New Mexico imposed a penalty on Meta that was almost one billion dollars, although the boring part was the fine; it was the directives concerning the engagement engine that constituted the real decision. AMD acquired a chip company which most people have never heard of, since the conflict is now shifting from training a model just once to running it a billion times a day. The independent festival in Golden Gate Park sold out even though a court was still deciding how much control Live Nation has over all the others.
These aren’t accounts concerning the loud thing; they are accounts concerning the load-bearing thing beneath it. The song was never the asset in question. The fine was never the objective. The training run was never the cost that really matters. And the headliner was never the entire story about who has the power.
This week, focus on the leverage rather than the noise. Here’s some information you need to know.

FEATURED DEEP DIVE: Nobody Automated Showing Up
Suno can produce a million songs by the time lunch arrives. Until someone chooses to appear, none of these songs have any significance. The song machine is aware of this; you can tell from the things they have purchased.
When Suno reached a settlement with Warner, the license was kept hidden from view. The clause which no one noticed was that Suno also took ownership of Songkick, a platform which keeps records of people buying tickets to see musicians perform. A company designed to produce unlimited music had actually spent money on finding out who leaves home to listen to it. Pitches are a form of marketing while purchases are acts of confession. Suno made the songs free. It then set about looking for the one thing it cannot print: the individual who wants the song, buys the ticket, and drives an hour to hear it. No one has managed to automate showing up. That is the essence of the current situation. In an environment where the feed is flooded with generated music, the scarce resource was never the song; it was the audience. You should follow the ticket, not the track.
The full breakdown is here.
A court told Meta to change how Instagram works, and the fine was the small part.
In the second stage of a significant trial concerning child safety, a judge from New Mexico has instructed Meta to pay $567 million, in addition to the $375 million that a jury awarded in March, bringing the total to $942 million. Approximately $420 million of this amount will be used to fund youth treatment services for a period of five years. The judge described the social media platforms as a public nuisance and required structural changes, including a monthly usage limit of 90 hours for teenagers and the prohibition of push notifications to people under 18 between nightfall and during school hours. Meta had revenues of about $60 billion in 2025, and its share price dropped by less than half a percent following the decision. The penalty is a trivial amount. What is important is that the orders affect the engagement system, which is responsible for generating profit. Meta states that it disagrees and intends to appeal.

AMD acquired Taalas, and the information reveals where the money went.
AMD has agreed to acquire Taalas, a chip company based in Toronto that was set up in 2023 and has raised around $219 million, in order to include inference-specialized silicon in its data-center range. The details of the deal have not been disclosed. The initial cost of training a large model is a one-off expenditure, whereas the ongoing cost involves running it for millions of users, for each query every day, and it is in this ongoing cost that the next competitive struggle will take place. Taalas incorporates parts of the model directly into the chip in order to reduce latency and power consumption. By making this acquisition, AMD is securing a share of the part of the system that decides whether an AI product can make a profit.

The venue at Outside Lands was fully booked, and as a result the issue of ownership became more prominent.
The 18th edition of Outside Lands took place from Friday to Sunday in Golden Gate Park, with Charli XCX, The Strokes, and RÜFÜS DU SOL as the headliners; over 140 artists performed on seven stages and the standard tickets had sold out on the main site. The significance lies in this aspect. In April, a jury concluded that Live Nation exercises anticompetitive control over venues, artists, and ticketing. The fact that an independently owned festival sold out at that time is therefore a piece of evidence regarding who controls the situation and as to how much demand a promoter can capture in the absence of the giant’s influence. IN THE KNOW
Business & Legal
Universal Music has asked a federal court to dismiss the lawsuit brought against it by the American Federation of Musicians over its AI licensing deals (Music Business Worldwide). The union’s “new use” theory now faces its first dispositive test; how the court rules shapes whether legacy contracts reach AI revenue.
Two new filings target the Concord, UMPG, and ABKCO case against Anthropic over more than 20,000 songs (Music Business Worldwide).
Reservoir Media posted results for its fiscal Q1 2027, the quarter ended June 30 (Music Business Worldwide). The independent rights vehicles report in the same window the majors just stumbled in; a clean quarter here would suggest the audit pressure is a major-label problem, not a rights problem.
Artists & Releases
Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic sequel could begin filming later this year for a 2028 release, after the first film powered a strong studio quarter (Digital Music News). The biopic-as-catalog-detonator thesis just got a franchise; the film window is now a release schedule.
Technology & AI
Suno integrated Musixmatch technology to identify when copyrighted compositions, lyrics, and music may be present in its system (Music Business Worldwide). The provenance layer the industry has been demanding is being built into the AI tools themselves; detection is becoming a feature, not just a lawsuit.
Suno issued an update, then quickly reissued a press release that quietly dropped a previously named partner, saying nothing had changed (Digital Music News). A partner scrubbed from a release is rarely nothing; watch this one.
